Ensuring Safe & Secure Learning Environments at PSJA ISD

Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD (PSJA ISD) remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all students, staff, and visitors. Through strategic investments and proactive measures, PSJA ISD has implemented a wide array of safety enhancements across its campuses, including the formation of a District Safety & Security Committee, increased officer training, advanced surveillance systems, and comprehensive emergency preparedness plans.

These efforts reflect the district's dedication to fostering a secure learning environment while encouraging the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities.

Among the many actions taken to enhance school safety and security include but are not limited to: 

  • Adding District Safety & Security Committee that includes tri-city law enforcement representatives, parents, staff, and School Board Members;  
  • Continuing the use of Crisis/Emergency Response Teams at every campus;  

  • Training of staff on campus safety procedures;   

  • Hands-on training for PSJA Police and Security Department officers on numerous topics such as weapons, crisis negotiation, injury response, and active shooter, to name a few;  

  • Increasing the number of PSJA Police Officers;  

  • PSJA Guardians (armed, trained officers) placed at all elementary schools;

  • Bullet-resistant shields for all PSJA Police Officers to ensure they can respond to any incident and emergency;

  • Campus checks and inspections by PSJA ISD Police K9 Officers;  

  • Scheduling Mandatory Drills;   

  • Districtwide Interior & Exterior Building Safety Audits;  

  • Developing Campus Threat Assessment Teams;   

  • Health & Safety Mobile Operations Bus;

  • Establishing access control procedures with single access points, locked instruction room doors, and exterior door locks; 

  • Visitor screening and registration through the Raptor Visitor Management System at all schools;  

  • Enhancing Video Surveillance for schools and district facilities; 

  • Protecting windows and doors of all buildings with shatter-resistant film;

  • Improving screening protocols with advanced Evolve Weapons Detection Systems at the PSJA Stadium and for district events;

  • Installing Night Lock devices in the doors of all classrooms districtwide;

  • Installing Stop the Bleed kits in all classrooms districtwide; and

  • Developing an Incident Command System app to be used to communicate during any incident or emergency
